Laundry Room Makeover

You want to makeover your cleaning routines because you’re worried about breathing in harmful chemicals. You throw out all of your store-bought cleaners and make the switch to easy DIY recipes.
So now you’re done right?
Your home is toxin free?

But what about your laundry room?

This, for me, was first on the list to get our home free of crappy chemicals. I found this to be the easiest switch since our littlest princess has had horrible skin from the day she was born. I was worried that the detergent we were using wasn’t helping. I knew there had to be a better alternative to even the “free & clear” laundry options that were out there.

So, I found a recipe for a super simple DIY laundry detergent and got mixing. It seriously takes about 5 minutes to make and it is good for 60 loads. This is our perfect “winter” detergent, since we are inside a lot more and we all stay a bit cleaner.
For the summer months, I made the choice to try out dōTERRA’s On Guard Laundry Detergent. It costs just over $31(CAD), but it is good for 64 loads and safe for HE washers. Not to mention, it tackles ALL of the stains and it smells amazing!

Here’s the deal on WHY we should all makeover our laundry rooms.

Our skin is our largest organ and it absorbs just about everything that we put onto it. That means that all of the synthetic fragrances and ingredients in your laundry detergent are ending up in your blood stream. If you’re afraid to breathe in the chemical cleaners, WHY would you knowingly put them all over your body?

The first ingredient listed on a very popular brand that claims to be “free & gentle” is ETHANOLAMINE. This ingredient comes with many warning labels, such as “harmful if swallowed”, “causes severe skin burns and eye damage”, “harmful in contact with the skin”, and even “harmful if inhaled”. I don’t know about you, but it doesn’t sit right with me to know that I’m exposing my children, and myself, to this.

Now you have swapped out your store-bought detergent and you are making your own or using dōTERRA’s super clean detergent.

Are you still using dryer sheets??

Sure, they may make your clothes smell really clean and fresh, but they are basically one big chemical sheet. That sheet of chemicals is now all over your clothes. And now it is all over your skin, and yes, going into your bloodstream.

Why not switch them out for some wool dryer balls? Then you can add your own personal scents with your essential oils. Serenity for the bed sheets. On Guard, Lemon or Purify for everything else. Not only are you getting the scent that YOU choose, but you will get the aromatherapy benefits from them too!

For less than $10, you can make a batch of detergent that will last for 60 loads.
The recipe is super simple, and you can find the ingredients in any grocery store!

Items that you will need:

*A large bucket (I like the big orange one from Home Depot)
*A whisk
*1 cup of Dr. Bronner’s Castile Soap (I prefer unscented, so I can add my own scents later)
*1 cup of Baking Soda
*1/3 cup of Coarse Salt
*20 drops of your favourite dōTERRA essential oils (Peppermint + Wild Orange is heaven, or use Purify or On Guard on its own)
*7 litres of hot water

Now all you have to do is mix everything together in the bucket, stir it with your whisk to make sure everything dissolves, and portion into glass bottles.
*My favourite bottles are these ones from IKEA!!!

My challenge to you is to throw out the garbage from the store, and make your own laundry detergent that is safe, effective and low cost!
